Jay Woodcroft
University of Alabama-Huntsville

A resident of Pickering, Ontario, Woodcroft is one of the leading scorers on the perennial national contender UAH hockey team, as he had 19 goals and 19 assists through the team’s first 27 games this year. A year ago, in 30 games, he has 17-25-42, while he had 9-15-24 in 27 games in l996-96.

Academically, he is ranked number one in his class with a 4.0 academic average while majoring in finance and is in Phi Kappa Phi, Omicron Delta Kappa, and Beta Gamma Sigma honor societies. Equally impressive is that is one of just eight finalists for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship from Canada.

As if these aren’t enough qualities to single him out, he works for the school newspaper, is an intramural referee, and is President of the finance Department Capital Management Group that is responsible for investing $100,000.00 of real funds for the Tennessee Valley Authority. What’s more, he has been involved over the years in many activities in the Huntsville community including serving as a volunteer youth hockey coach and clinic instructor, Special Olympics, and working with children with special needs at a local school through the Academy for Academics and arts.

UAH athletics director James Harris wrote:

"Mr. Woodcroft is an accomplished scholar, athlete, and gentleman. He embodies the qualities of a well-rounded individual and demonstrates a balance of leadership and humility that distinguishes him above the others. I have been an intercollegiate athletics administrator for more than 25 years and I have observed thousands of student athletes, many of whom have shown leadership, integrity, and sportsmanship. In my opinion, Jay Woodcroft has risen to be one of the top of them all."

This marks the second straight year a UAH hockey player has been a finalist for the Humanitarian, as Jamie Daniel Baby was one of the top five a year ago.
