Brown University
A native of Toronto, Sorbara began her involvement in community activities in 1994 when she distributed food products for the Daily Bread Food Bank and distributed meals for the Meals on Wheels program in her hometown of Toronto. Her efforts for both groups continued through 1997 when she enrolled at Brown University.
In addition, she has also worked in Toronto as a summer intern at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto (1995-96) and was the Director of the Wheel Smart Spotter Program (1997-98). This program is intended to enforce inline and cycle safety in the neighborhood parks. She participated in the initial start up of the program, organized public educational events in city parks and summer day camps, and developed the program’s public relations material.
Christina continued her involvement in the community when she matriculated at Brown. From 1998-2000, she worked at the Vartan Gregorian Elementary School in Providence where she worked with inner city youth to improve their reading ability. Then, this past year, she single-handedly organized a charitable eight-hour stationary bicycle ride for breast cancer research as she worked closely with the National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations and the American Cancer Society.
Her future commitments include volunteering for the Habitat for Humanity Program in Uganda, Africa this summer, while she plans to travel to Asia, the Mid-East, and Australia during the spring of 2002 assisting on volunteer missions where possible.
In the classroom, she has a 3.45 grade point average while majority in business economics and international relations.
A three-year hockey letterwinner who also played rugby for two years and club soccer one year, Christina was named to the ECAC All-Tournament Team last year and was Brown’s Most Improved Player as a junior.
Christina can best be described as a big ball of energy on a mission," said her letter of nomination. "Looking at her resume, one is hard-pressed to figure out how she has fit so much into such a short period of time. She spreads herself out between sports, academics, work, internships, and volunteerism with surprising equality."
