Bowdoin College
Born in St. Paul, MN and a resident now in Mendota Heights, MN, Sonnen has served as a member of the "Bears and Cubs," which is Bowdoin’s Big Brother/Big Sister organization. She has also extended her one semester as being a teacher’s aide in order to continue mentoring a classroom of middle school children until she graduates this May.
Gloria has taken her volunteerism to her hometown. This past summer she volunteered at a foster home for abused and neglected children in Minnesota while also working as a counselor at a local YMCA.
Academically, she has a 3.1 grade point average while majoring in psychology. Her academic average is even more impressive the last five semesters as she has a 3.5 GPA during this stretch.
A three-year letterwinner on defense and two-time captain, she had her best offensive statistics last season when she had a pair of goals and five assists for seven points.
"Every so often a player comes along who makes a difference in the lives of everyone that she touches - coaches, teammates, fellow students, members of the community," the Bowdoin women’s hockey coach wrote in her letter of support of Gloria. "Gloria’s contribution to Bowdoin College extends beyond athletics, as she weaves her leadership on the ice and into the locker room into the college’s residential life system, academics, and volunteering in both Brunswick and her hometown. Gloria serves as a positive role mode in all the communities she touches, peers and youngsters alike."
