University of Nebraska-Omaha
A native of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Cupp has been at the forefront of the Maverick’s involvement in community affairs during his collegiate career. In only its fourth year as a varsity sport, the UMO’s hockey program is well known for its charity work in the Omaha community, and Jason has been one of the pioneers. In the letter nominating him for the Humanitarian Award, it was noted that “The tireless work ethic Jason has shown and the dedication he has given to so many in our community has set a standard for future Maverick hockey players.”
Much of his efforts have been devoted to the "Scoring for Kids" program. The program, which was his brainchild, is designed to promote cultural diversity in Omaha youth hockey and to give disadvantaged children exposure to ice sports. Through his efforts, he has solicited more than $10,000 from individual foundations and corporations and these funds help the “Scoring for Kids” program. During the weekly sessions held after UMO’s practices, the local youth are led through drills and a scrimmage that Jason supervises.
In addition, during his career at UMO, he has been a volunteer with the Omaha Multiple Sclerosis Walk and the Children’s Miracle Network. Last summer, he was a counselor for “Pacific Pals”, a daily children’s workshop designed to give disadvantaged kids the opportunity to participate in activities that are not available to them on a regular basis.
Academically, he has maintained a 3.28 cumulative grade point average as a criminal justice major.
Athletically, he entered this year with a three-year total of 22 goals and 47 assists for 79 points in 97 games.
