University of Massachusetts-Lowell
A resident of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Brown has been an outstanding student-athlete at UMass-Lowell. On the ice he has excelled as a defensive forward during his four-year career. This past season, he has also provided outstanding leadership as on of the team’s assistant captains.
In the classroom, he has a 3.77 grade point average, while last semester; he achieved a 3.88 GPA. A member of the Dean’s List in six of his seven semesters at UMass/Lowell, he has been on the Hockey East All-Academic Team since 1966, and is one of just three players in all Hockey East eligible this year for the Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Award. This is presented to a league player who achieves a 3.0 average or better in all eight semester while playing hockey. He has also been admitted to Beta Gamma Sigma, an honors fraternity for business majors. It is the highest honor a business student can receive as a student must be in the top seven percent of his/her class to be eligible for admission into the fraternity.
As committed as he has been to hockey and academics, he has been equally involved in community affairs. His activities have included serving as an academic tutor at two local schools where he has helped students with their academic studies as well as show them what it takes to be a successful person. He has also worked with the City of Lowell on the DARE program, sending a positive message on the value of being drug free. He has also spent time volunteering with RARA, a recreation program for retarded adults in the Lowell area. In addition, he and his teammates have worked endless hours with the Special Olympics, Lowell Food shelf, and the House of Hope. On campus, he was voted by his peers to chair the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, while he has also been a teaching assistant for the freshman life skills program at Lowell.
In a letter nominating Brown for the Humanitarian Award, UMass/Lowell’s senior associate athletic director Joan Lehoullier wrote:
"Without a doubt, Craig Brown exemplifies all we hope our student-athletes will be at this level of competition. He is a determined scholar, a hard working and competitive athlete and a caring, involved citizen within his community. We are extremely proud of all Craig has been able to accomplish during his matriculation here at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He has been an inspiration to all of the student-athletes he has worked with and the hundreds of individuals he has touched through the service projects he has been involved with."
