Jamie Daniel Baby
University of Alabama-Huntsville

A resident of Parry Sound, Ontario, Baby, who has maintained a 3.42 cumulative average while majoring in biology and chemistry, has been actively involved with Huntsville community affairs for the past four years, including working with the Special Olympics Swim Team and the Accelerated Reading Program at the local elementary schools. In addition, he has participated in the Christmas party for the handicapped and underprivileged in Huntsville Hospital, mentored one of the local elementary school's fourth-grade class, volunteered to be a youth hockey clinic coach, and been a motivational speaker at a local school.
In a letter of recommendation she wrote for Baby, Dr. B. Jeanne Fisher, the Vice President of Student Affairs at the University, wrote:

"The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) Athletics Philosophy reads in part: 'While striving for academic excellence is the central mission of UAH, an important University goal is recognized participation in community activities. The reputation of UAH as an integral part of Huntsville will be enhanced by the student athletic program and benefit (of) the community.' Jamie Baby epitomizes and reflects the highest standard of our philosophy."

As is indicated by his cumulative average, Baby has also been an exemplary student. A member of Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society, he has received both the Silver and Bronze Medals for Academic Achievement and is a Dean's List student in the College of Science. On the ice, he has been a leader for one of the nation's most successful college hockey teams. Team captain this year, he was named to the 1998 UConn All-Tournament Team and was a key player for the team's winning the 1996 and 1998 NCAA Tournament titles and the second-place finish in 1997.
